I was thinking of making that substitution for the heavy cream--didn't think about using cottage cheese though. I was going to do a basic low fat white sauce. thanks for the idea of the CC

These came out pretty good. my first batch was really crispy. the 2nd batch, I added a bit more potatoes and they were much better. I used about 1/2 tablespoon of bacon grease and no butter (had cooked bacon this AM). served with scrambled eggs and bacon--we skipped the toast. I like this method because my hashbrowns don't seem to get that crispiness...

This was quite good, but I did add some garlic/lemon/pepper season blend and dried thyme, oregano, and red pepper flakes. To those that thought it was bland--well yes, the recipe as stated didn't have much in the way of herbs/spices. of course, if you used to more flavorful dishes this will be bland

I couldn't agree with you more. Another one with reviews that bugs that daylights out of me is when the cook drastically changes the recipe. I mean swapping out a different cut of meat or using totally different spices etc. One person slammed the recipe because she didn't use salt and didn't like the herbs/spice and left those out and complained...

I find it amusing when folks say they are experienced cooks and complain about something being bland. well, if there is no seasoning, YES it is going to be bland; but, an experienced cook should know that by looking at a recipe. jmo

There are a few ways to cut back on fat/calories in the recipe and still maintain a fairly accurate recipe. If this recipe is not for you, fine, move on to the next recipe--snarky comments are not needed. we see enough snarkiness day in and day out--we should not have to put up with negative opinions from someone who didn't make the recipe. unless...

this is good, but it is not a new recipe. we had this growing up once a week. Nana called it American Goulash. The only difference was Nana used elbow macaroni because Gramps was weird and thought the other pastas would taste different. Sometimes I will add corn to mine. Or put a dollop of sour cream on top. I've made it with ground turkey and...

very BIG pet peeve of mine--people when you make major changes to a recipe DO NOT rate the original recipe! seriously, it's like rating a chicken recipe and wondering why it didn't turn out because you used canned tuna!

first, most people that cook regularly should be able to look at a recipe and see that it looks like it will be on the bland side for their taste. That being said, I used pepper jack and sharp cheddar cheese combo. I added fresh chopped garlic to the ground beef. I also followed another reviewer by seasoning the potato layer. This is a good "
