Since there are two long waits, it couldn't hurt to do some of the steps the night before. We had fun smashing candy canes with a hammer, and getting our hands messy while mixing it into the dough. We had no problems, aside from our cookies being nowhere near as attractive as the picture. Only make this for people who like peppermint a lot.
