Reviewed Homemade Granola Bars

I just made these last night and cut them this morning. I didn't have parchment paper so I buttered the pan really well. They came off ok, but didn't bind together all that well--I had to handle them very delicately and ended up with half a cup or more of loose pieces at the end--any idea what I might have done wrong?
The recipe doesn't mention oil--busyme2, would that help?
