This recipe beats the pants off Paula Dean's apple cake recipe! I didn't even have cardamom or grains of Paradise in the house, and it was so flavorful, nonetheless! This was a great way to use up apples before they go south, and everybody who tasted it said, "wow."

This recipe should be fool-proof and is truly excellent. Reviewers who thought these bars were too sweet may have mis-measured an ingredient. Superb texture. Not too sweet. I made this on a snowy day, and didn't have yogurt on hand, but I always keep powdered buttermilk in the fridge, so I substituted 6 oz. of buttermilk for the yogurt.
