I made 1/2 batch and followed the prescribed soaking times. I used a good polish vodka made from potato's (Luksusowa). It turned out great - very smooth! Also, I decided to juice the lemons after peeling the zest, and after doing all that work to peel the lemons I didn't want to waste the peels, so I followed a recipe for candied lemons peels....
