Replied to Easy Caramel Sauce Recipe : Ree Drummond : Food Network

Feb 21, 2014 on FoodNetwork.com

It's supposed to be one teaspoon vanilla, but is incorrectly listed. If you watched the episode, you'd see this. You should NEVER add flour and corn syrup to thicken caramel. It thickens on its own as the temperature increases. If you cook until too high a temperature, you will end up with candy.

Corn syrup will not change the silkiness but will change the sweetness and thicken the caramel slightly as well as give it an even more "artificial" flavor. The amount of vanilla in this is what makes it deeper and sweeter in flavor so if you didn't add the corn syrup and used the recommended amount of vanilla, it would have been perfectly sweet...

I wouldn't give it one star because you didn't follow the instructions. If you had left out the corn syrup and not overcooked it, it would have been fine. If you overcook it, it will of course turn into candy.

This recipe is awesome. I had to use canned mushrooms (not my first choice) and the boiled pasta and needed a little more mozzarella to put on top but this was great. I used shredded Parmesan too because the alternative was too expensive. My husband and I loved it."

This was great. I watched the show and although I had a recipe for chicken and dumplings it wasn't completely from scratch and my husband wasn't crazy about it. This one though he loved and my kids have seconds every time I make it. Thickening the gravy is easy with flour. I don't use the poultry seasoning at all."

Although it's a good starter recipe for a jumping off point, these pancakes were way too bland for my sons and I. I even added an extra tbsp of sugar and they still weren't as sweet as I'd like them. With some tweaking this would be a good recipe but otherwise I'd seek others. I even added bananas in the pancakes and it still tasted flat."
