Reviewed Apple and Pear Crisp

Sep 5, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

This was a perfect recipe for me. I had both pears and apples in my weekly CSA box. The fruit combination was delicious and the topping for the crisp was fabulous. A very comforting dessert with summer ending and fall on the way. Yes, we served vanilla ice cream with the crisp! ""

Reviewed Portobello Mushroom Lasagna

Aug 30, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

I found this lasagna too heavy and rich. And it was expensive to make. I would make it again, but perhaps add more vegetables and lighten the white sauce. ""

Reviewed Vegetable Tian

Aug 12, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

Rave reviews for the Vegetable Tian. Loved the fabulous color from the vegetable combination. I did not have a problem with extra moisture from the tomatoes. The tomatoes I used were very ripe and juicy, medium sized. I used a combination of leftover cheeses, mostly sharp cheddar with excellent results. This dish would travel well and be deliciou...

Reviewed Strawberry Scones

Aug 4, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

Call me a traditionalist, but I did not care for the eggs in the scone dough. The finished scone lacked the ultra flaky texture I was searching for. The scones also were missing that great flavor I've come to expect with Ina's recipes. Perhaps it was the strawberries I used? Ina has set the bar so high, I was disappointed this time!""

Reviewed Peach Tart

Jul 18, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

We enjoyed this tart. It was quick and easy to prepare. Although the flavor of the peaches was showcased and did not get lost in the tart filling the overall flavor was a bit mundane. I added 1t vanilla to the filling but next time will also try orange zest. However, I did not like the big pieces of peach. Next time I will cut them in slices that "

Reviewed Tropical Watermelon Sorbet

Jul 11, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

This sorbet was easy to make and has great flavor. But it needs to be eaten as soon as it is made. If freezing throughly it becomes a rock solid ice cube, which is impossible to scoop. When removing from the freezer to soften it also responds like an ice cube. The flavor portion melts while the water remains frozen. Yuk, if not consumed when made....

Reviewed Rib Eyes with Goat Cheese, Meyer Lemon-Honey Mustard and Watercress

Jul 4, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

We tried this recipe on the 4th of July. We adore grilled rib eyes and usually serve with a traditional salsa. As this was my 1st Bobby Flay recipe & I was not sure about trying for the holiday. But everyone adored it! Who knew, goat cheese, vinaigrette and arugula (instead of watercress) would be so good with the rib eyes! Thanks Bobby!"

Reviewed Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread

Jul 4, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

Dense but light cornbread, how is that possible? Almost a dessert! I did add fresh corn from 3 ears, sauteed in a bit of butter and used a white English cheddar. Great Ina recipe. "

Reviewed Watermelon and Arugula Salad

Jul 4, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

This salad is not only very easy to make but very refreshing on a hot day. A nice light salad to serve with grilled rib eyes. I prepared the 3 components: salad, melon & dressing ahead and put together just prior to serving. "

Reviewed Fig and Almond Tart

Jun 29, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

This makes a lovely tart. When I found fresh figs from the Central Valley of California I knew it was time to try this recipe. I was not disappointed! The filling does not overpower the delicate fig flavor. My crust was light & flakey. The only change I would make is to add lemon zest to the tart filling as well as the crust. "

Reviewed Spicy Mint Beef

Jun 29, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

This was fun to make & eat. I had a great adventure shopping for the ingredients, at the local Asian market. And I didn't spend much! We loved the dish, but it was just a little spicy for us. Next time I will use 2 Thai chilies, and slightly reduce the chili paste. Just prior to serving I added some cornstarch to thicken the sauce a bit. Definitel"

Reviewed Fig Bran Muffins

Jun 19, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

I adore this recipe. My figs were unsulfured and somewhat dry; after chopping I soaked in very hot water for about 5 minutes, drained and patted them dry before adding to the batter. My muffins were moist, light and had great fig taste. Next time I make these muffins I am going to add orange zest. "

Reviewed Challah French Toast

Jun 19, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

I've been making French toast for years, but without a recipe. I am so glad I tried Ina's. I had never soaked the bread in the egg/mix mixture for a full 5 minutes. What a difference that made, the French toast was very light, but yet custardy. The addition of honey and orange zest imparts an added layer of flavor. Definitely will be using this re"

Reviewed Guacamole Salad

Jun 13, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

Served the Guacamole Salad with marinaded grilled flat iron steaks salsa and limes, cilantro rice and warm tortillas. We had a great summer dinner. I got raves on the salad, but felt it was a bit too "zesty". I only used one jalapeno and next time will cut back a bit on the lime zest. Any ideas on what to use instead of fresh minced garlic? Maybe "

Reviewed Homemade Pesto

Jun 6, 2011 in Food Network Community Toolbox on FoodNetwork.com

Fresh pesto is so superior to store bought. This recipe is super easy with the food processor. And I do like the addition of walnuts. It not only adds body to the pesto, but walnuts are less expensive. Although the pesto is best when freshly made, this recipe makes more than I can use at one time. I freeze the rest in small containers, covering t"

I had resisted the Red Velvet craze. The Red Velvet cupcakes I had sampled were just so-so. Nothing special. BUT I finally tried Ina's recipe for yesterday's holiday, Memorial Day. This is a very easy recipe, makes up quickly. The cupcakes were wonderful, very light with a rich cream cheese frosting. The key to cupcakes, is not to over bake. I wat"

This was the first time I made risotto. It was superb! It took me longer than the stated time, but I used fresh peas, not frozen. I just used the same pans for cooking and blanching as the asparagus. It is a wonderful recipe to showcase spring vegetables. "

I've made this recipes several times and it has become one of our favorites. I must say there is so much flavor; this is a pasta dish that does not need any cheese. I made the recipe with fresh peas that I blanched & then shocked in cold water. GR8 recipe for the start of spring! This was a hit with everyone with enough for leftovers, even though I halved the recipe. The pesto recipe with both walnuts & pine nuts is well worth making, classic Ina flavor punch. This is the first time for a problem with one of Ina's recipes. Used a pan that was 17x 12x 1 (this is the largest that fits in my ovens) BUT it was not large enough. Topping mixture boiled over! This a a great over-the-top decadent cookie. Will make again, but will either half the recipe or use two 9x13 pans. "
