Reviewed Wolfgang Puck's Savory Squash Soup

Oct 14, 2014 in on

I used 2 large butternut squash which filled up a 4 qt pot. As far as the flavor goes, once roasted the squash has a very sweet flavor. But if you like it sweeter, use applesauce over sugar for better flavor.
I tweaked the seasonings: I doubled all the seasonings listed. I used ground cloves instead of nutmeg, and added 2 tsp of thyme l...

Reviewed Buttermilk Dressing Coleslaw

Oct 6, 2014 in on

This is a really good cole slaw mixture. I will reduce the sugar next time, just a bit too sweet.
I added 1/2 tsp celery seed and 1/2 tsp of marjoram, and increased the buttermilk by 1/4 cup. I also added 3 minced cloves of garlic, chopped 1/2 of medium onion and 1/2 green bell pepper.
I used a 16oz pre-shredded bag of cabbage...

Reviewed Easy Chicken Cordon Bleu

It';s a good basic recipe with lots of wiggle room for personal tweaking. I added coriander, garlic powder and Beau Monde seasoning in the egg mixture. I didn';t have any ham so I substituted with cooked broccoli and used smoked gouda cheese."

Reviewed Chocolate Cake

Jan 10, 2014 on

This cake is very good. I used cake flour instead of regular flour, hot coffee (Starbucks French Roast) in place of the water and butter for the vegetable oil. This cake is good without any icing, but tastes awesome with mint flavored buttercream icing too.

Reviewed Curried Chicken and Rice Soup

Dec 17, 2013 on

I made this into a one pot soup. After reading other reviews I added about 5 cloves of minced garlic, red pepper flakes, 1 tsp celery seeds, 2 heaping tbsp oregano, doubled the curry, and added 1 cup of parboiled rice, and used chicken stock vs water. I omitted the sugar, dill, and mint.
It was ok. I think I'll stick to the creamy soups made...

Reviewed Fried Zucchini

Oct 21, 2013 on

I used celery salt, garlic powder and onion powder in the buttermilk and let the zucchini marinate for a couple of hours. Then I used Jiffy baking mix, added some shredded parmesan cheese, coriander and black pepper. Between the celery salt and baking mix it didn't require any additional salt. They came out crispy and tasty. My husband even liked...

Reviewed Alice Jo's Spaghetti Sauce

Oct 16, 2013 on

It was pretty good. I used oyster sauce in place of the sugar, used 4 garlic cloves, I used celery salt instead of regular salt, and then used beef broth in place of the water. I also added about 1/2 tsp of ground fennel and simmered for about 45 minutes. If the tomato sauce is overcooked it gets that acidic flavor.

Reviewed Exotic Spice Cookies with Ginger, Cardamom and Rose Water

May 20, 2013 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

Very good cookie. I read some other reviews, made my own variations to the recipe and it came out just fine. I used more butter in place of the shortening, increased the rose water to 3 tsp, substituted the pepper for allspice, and left out the candied ginger. Over all it was a very flavorful cookie. "

Reviewed Easy Cheese Danish

Aug 17, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

Very easy to make and quite tasty. The only modifications I made was cutting it down to using the rind of 1 lemon, adding 1/2 tsp of cardamom, and adding a dollop of canned cherries to the filling before baking. Then I brushed the pastry with the egg wash and sprinkled sugar all over. "

Reviewed Sweet and Sour Mahi-Mahi

Aug 5, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

The sauce is delicious. But I used brown sugar instead of regular sugar, and added some cayenne pepper and garlic for more flavor. I also used panko bread crumbs for a crunchier texture."

Reviewed Cornmeal-Crusted Roasted Ratatouille Tart

Aug 4, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

I'm not a fan of eggplant but this was a really good meal. I did add some garlic powder and Garam masala in the crust mixture and it was delicious. I also added minced garlic, sliced carrots, bell peppers and yellow squash to the filling. It would also make a great side dish."

Reviewed Cranberry Harvest Muffins

Aug 1, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

Really good flavor, easy to make. I did add 1 tsp of cardamom, 2 tsp of vanilla extract, and I used Craisins instead of cranberries. Also my batch made 24 large cupcakes vs 18."

Reviewed Baklava

Jul 16, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

I really liked this baklava. It tasted better than what I've been served in restaurants. But I also did a few alterations. I used 4 different types of nuts, added cardamom, cinnamon and 1 cup of sugar to the nut mixture. Then I melted the honey, 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of brown sugar, about 1 1/12 tsp vanilla, the water, and 4 heaping tablespoons"

Reviewed Citrus Crostata

Jun 26, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

I've wanted to try this recipe for a long time and finally found a store that carried mascarpone cheese. IMO, the cheese tasted like unsalted whipped butter by itself, so that was disappointing.
Then it took me about 2 hours to prep the fruit. I followed the directions too a tee. The jam never firmed up, so I added more arrow root. It was...

Reviewed New England Clam Chowder

Jun 13, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

I didn't have any clams or heavy cream, so instead I chopped up some shrimp and I used 2 eggs in place of the heavy cream, and used 3 cups of whole milk. I also added 4 tbsp of garlic and 1 tsp of celery seed. It came out just fine."

Reviewed Delilah Winder's Seven-Cheese Mac and Cheese

Jan 8, 2012 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

Next time I make this, I'm leaving the eggs out. I left it in the oven to get brown on top and ended up with mac & cheese souffle. Good flavor but I'm not a fan of souffles.""
