Excellent recipe! Do cut the sugar in half for the custard. The sauce is plenty sweet. I also added the zest of an orange to the custard which brightened up the dish.

I agree this recipe needs some tweaking. Try working the butter into the flour by squeezing small cubes between your fingers to form butter disks in the flour. And any southerner knows to melt a couple of TBS of bacon grease into the pan then sop the biscuits in the grease before baking."

Excellent all around recipe. Try this however - I added 3 TBS of lavender to the pot when making the simple syrup to soak the cake in. I then decorated the finished cake with a sprinkling of lavender flowers. The combination of the lemon and lavender is incredible!! It also works well substituting all the lemon elements with orange and adding chocolate...
