Reviewed beef stew with red wine, mushrooms and horseradish cream

Jan 1, 2015 on

Outrageous. Omitted the Madeira and added some carrots. Might cut back on the wine next time, I find that a lot of recipes that call for wine tend to use more than necessary, especially if you're likely to have wine with the meal. DO NOT skip the horseradish sauce, it's a highlight of the dish and so so good.

Reviewed sausage, kale, and lentil soup

Sep 28, 2014 on

Don't hesitate to make this, it has great flavor and heartiness. Just be aware that the lentils will require at least 15 minutes more to cook. I cut the lentils back to one cup based on the reviews here but a little more would be fine. You can change up the veggies as you wish, just be sure to stick with the seasonings and other ingredients.

Reviewed zesty chicken meatballs

Sep 21, 2014 on

I've made these many times and enjoy them. They're easy to make and go well with just about any pesto pasta. Just beware that lemon is the predominant flavor. I plan to try them w/o the lemon and bump up the herbs to use with a red sauce.

Reviewed orecchiette with turkey sausage and broccoli rabe

Jul 26, 2014 on

made this many times and finally realized not to cook the pasta in the rabe water. Certainly helps to minimize the bitterness. Be sure to deglaze with white wine or broth. Make extra cuz the leftovers are even better.

Reviewed arugula, watermelon and feta salad

Unless you're a big fan of mint this doesn't really need it, even used sparingly it's overpowering. Otherwise a great recipe.

Reviewed ratatouille panzanella salad with herb-parmesan dressing

Jul 13, 2014 on

Big hit! Left out the eggplant and was still great. Might cut back on the vinegar next time. Served with a grilled skirt steak, awesome meal.

Reviewed Classic Italian Turkey Meatballs Recipe : Giada De Laurentiis : Food Network

Jun 8, 2014 on

Very good meatballs but the cooking time is off. 20 minutes is not enough, gave them an extra five minutes and they still fell apart in the sauce. Ina Garten's recipe calls for 30-40 minutes at the same temp, will do that next time.

Reviewed fish tacos with chipotle cream

May 17, 2014 on

Surprisingly lacking in flavor. The yogurt doesn't seem to work here and I usually don't mind it to cut back on mayo.

Reviewed turkey robinson

May 13, 2014 on

I've made this so many times and never get tired of it. Add garlic, onion and red pepper to the turkey, some fresh herbs like thyme if I have it on hand, and serve over whole wheat penne. Also may add some mushrooms. Very quick, easy and filling, a perfect weeknight meal. Be sure to add a full package of spinach as it reduces a lot.

Reviewed celery and parmesan salad

May 11, 2014 on

Meh. Too much going on, especially the lemon and the parsley was unnecessary. Didn't use the anchovy paste, not sure if that would have made it any better. Like the idea of a celery salad but this wasn't it. If you make this as a side dish be careful what you serve it with, it may not pair well with other strong flavors.

Perfect marinade for fajitas.

Reviewed linguine with shrimp, asparagus and cherry tomatoes

Apr 26, 2014 on

Very good but I prefer a similar recipe that includes rosemary instead of the herbs here. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Reviewed pineapple and avocado salsa

Apr 21, 2014 on

On a whim I searched on avocado and pineapple and found this. Had everything on hand except the cilantro. Turned out fantastic, served on grilled chicken breasts. I normally wouldn't give five stars to a salsa but this is really good, will make again and again.

Reviewed penne with sun-dried tomato pesto

Apr 20, 2014 on

Very good. Added some pine nuts to the pesto but otherwise stuck to the recipe. Next time might up the garlic and cheese. And as with any pesto, a little goes a long way. The sweetness of the sun dried tomato and basil might be a bit cloying for some.

Reviewed sweet potato oven fries with avocado dip

Apr 12, 2014 on

This method of making fries has been the best I've tried and make them often. Even if they blacken a bit they don't taste burned. Just tried the avocado dip and it was fantastic, will certainly make it again, just cut back on the cream cheese and mayo.

Reviewed ribbony shrimp and pasta scampi

Mar 17, 2014 on

Similar to some other recipes I've made and just as good. The squash is a great addition. Added some dried rosemary to the shrimp which adds depth. And using whole wheat pasta certainly makes it more filling.

Reviewed swiss steak

Feb 2, 2014 on

After googling swiss steak I found that it is more about the method rather than the exact ingredients, so no worry in changing it up. I've made the recipe here several times and although the smoked paprika is an interesting twist it is by no means absolutely necessary. Just made it without, adding some fresh thyme and bay leaf and it was just as...

Reviewed garlic and herb grilled sweet potato fries

Jan 26, 2014 on

These were good, especially with the garlic herb oil. Kind of pain to boil then grill, will probably do again but will just bake them in the oven to finish unless the grill is already going. Not sure grilling did a lot for the flavor.

Reviewed Omelet with Strawberries

Jan 1, 2014 on

This was great, perfect for New Year's brunch. Really was like a crepe. I omitted the sugar from the eggs as I didn't want it to sweet. Different and easy, what's not to like.

Reviewed Italian Quesadillas

Dec 16, 2013 on

Very good! I used whole wheat tortillas and a packaged Italian cheese blend and they came out great. Served as a side for Giada's turkey, kale and brown rice soup.

Reviewed Beer Braised BBQ Pork Butt

Dec 8, 2013 on

Wow. Totally worthy of all the five star ratings. Only changes I made was using a packaged bbq rub and added a couple of tbsp. cider vinegar to the sauce. Might add a few drops of liquid smoke next time but seriously, this recipe doesn't need any tweaking.

Reviewed Chicken Stew

Nov 10, 2013 on

The main things this recipe has going for it is the speed and ease of prep and a fairly basic ingredient list. To avoid the dreaded blandness I added three cloves of garlic, a parm rind, and seasoned liberally, which no doubt helped give it some flavor. I also added a half of a cabbage that need to be used which added some substance as one can of...

Reviewed Rice and Black Bean Pilaf

Oct 27, 2013 on

This is great. I thought the bean mixture looked kind of dry when cooking but it came together fine when combined with the rice. Very flavorful, didn't need to add any salt which is a plus. Perfect with grilled chicken.

Reviewed White Bean and Chicken Chili

Bland and kind of bitter. Like another reviewer said, I should have thought twice about the fennel. Have made much better and easier white chili than this. "

Reviewed Meat and Mushroom Lasagna

Sep 15, 2013 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

The lemon zest is just wrong, way overpowering, and I used less than called for. Can't tell if the rest of it was any good. I used low fat ricotta but otherwise stuck to the recipe. Was also drier than I'd prefer. Sorry but this is a fail. I'll eat the leftovers, hopefully the lemon flavor will dissipate. "

Reviewed Lentil Quinoa Salad

Sep 14, 2013 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

Really good, one of the best quinoa recipes I've tried. I left out the cilantro and added some diced cucumber after it cooled, everything works great together. If the leftovers hold up in the fridge reasonably well I can see making a large quantity for an easy side dish during the week. "

Reviewed Killer Kale Pasta

Aug 25, 2013 in Food Network Community Toolbox on

It does make a lot so I made about half the pasta and mixed it with some sauce in a separate bowl before serving. Cut back on the crushed red pepper by half and it was just right. You should like kale as the taste comes through clearly. Decent, light pasta meal."
