Did you possibly buy a frozen pie crust already instead of a premade pie dough? Because maybe you didn't buy a deep-dish frozen pie dough which is less volume and the reason that the top was messed up was because you are the one that messed with it. You shouldn't have filled the pie so full and by making an aluminum foil shield to go around the crust you can stop the excessive browning. I'm not saying that it is necessarily your fault but this sounds like user error rather than a bad recipe.
