The basil syrup recipe is flawed. Boiling basil leaves doesn't extract much flavor in itself; I tried this and it was a bust. In order to get a rich basil flavor, you must muddle the basil leaves. Crushing the leaves releases the oils, and, as a result, the flavor. "
