When Ree made this on her show the recipe was doubled so make sure if you watched it and then make according to this recipe that you realize that. Also, for the review that said the batter was not as thick, Ree used very heaping amounts of cocoa and flour and there is always the possibility that the batter had sat there a few moments and thickene"

I watched Paula made this on her show and asked my husband if he would want to try this for Christms. He did. He fries turkeys each year so he is very experienced using a deep fryer.
